While wasps may seem like harmful pests, they can be beneficial to have around. These little stingers feed their larvae insects which can help in controlling other pests around your home. That said, if you have a wasp infestation near your home, you will want to take care of that problem to prevent the possibility of anyone becoming stung and suffering an allergic reaction. Several simple solutions can help to eliminate a wasp problem around your home.
1. Soap and Water
You can get rid of small nests hanging around your with a combination of liquid detergent and water. Add two tablespoons of liquid detergent to an empty spray bottle. Fill the bottle with water and shake until the soap and water are thoroughly combined. Spray the mixture onto the nests. The detergent will clog the pores of the wasps and kill them instantaneously.
2. Peppermint Oil
Peppermint oil effectively repels wasps. You can use this oil to keep wasps away by making an oil, soap and water solution. Follow the instructions for the soap and water solution but add several drops of peppermint oil before you shake the bottle. Spray the solution on areas outside your home where wasps build their nests such as crevices, eaves, ledges and porch roofs.
3. Clove, Geranium and Lemongrass Oil
A combination of clove, geranium and lemongrass oils also effectively repels wasps. You can use these oils to keep wasps away by adding them to the soap and water solution. Follow the instructions for the soap and water solution but add several drops of each of the oils before you shake the bottle. Spray the solution on areas outside your home where wasps build their nests such as crevices, eaves, ledges and porch roofs.
4. Wasp Traps
Wasp traps lure these pests into a plastic bottle and keep them contained. You can create a wasp trap with a plastic soda or juice bottle and some sugar water. Begin by pouring a half cup of water into your bottle. Add a quarter cup of sugar to the water. Shake the bottle until the water and sugar are thoroughly combined. Add more water to the bottle until it is half filled. Use a sharp edge to carefully cut half to three quarter inch hole in the top part of the container. Place the bottle close to an area where you see a hive. While this is an effective solution, it can end up catching wasps that are merely flying nearby.
5. Repair Cracks and Crevices
To keep wasps out of your house, you will need to make sure there is no way for them to gain access. Seal any small cracks and crevices in your siding or around lines that lead to the interior of your home. Patch any holes in screens as well. It is best to do this work in the late fall and early spring.
6. Seal Waste Bins
Wasp problems tend to be worse in areas where there is easy access to food sources. You can alleviate this problem by sealing your waste and compost bins, storing them in your garage if possible.
