Fecal Droppings
Fecal droppings are a sure sign your rental has a pest problem. Unfortunately, you may not know where to look when inspecting the rental before signing the lease.
Check the corners of the floor, around baseboards, and the areas behind doors. Also, open each drawer and cabinet in the rental to inspect for droppings.
If you see droppings that resemble coffee grounds, there are most likely cockroaches in the rental. Droppings that measure around a ¼ inch are typically a sign of rodents. If you see tubular droppings that are larger, there may be other types of wildlife in the rental.
Damage
Without pest control, your apartment or home may experience damage from certain insects and rodents.
Check door and window frames for signs of damage. If the wood frames feel soft or hallow, the rental may have termites. Small scuff or scratch marks around baseboards, molding, cabinets, and drywall are signs of mice and other rodents attempting to create nests in the rental.
Also, check the wiring for signs of damage. Mice and rats often chew on electrical wiring, which increases the risk of a dangerous fire. If you notice damage to your electrical wiring, do not sign a lease or move into the rental.
Visible Pests
The majority of pests are nocturnal, meaning they are most active at night. At night when it is dark and quiet, cockroaches and rodents will come out of their nests to search for food. During the day, these pests will remain in their nests.
