Mosquito
|

At Bug Commander Pest Control, we know just about everything about bugs. We also know that most of our customers aren’t as familiar with flying, crawling and buzzing pests as we are, and that there are a lot of misconceptions out there about these kinds of pests.  If you have a pest problem at your home and you don’t think you need our help to handle it, you may be making a big mistake, especially when it comes to mosquitoes, bees, wasps and ants.  Here are some myths about these three kinds of bugs that we don’t want you to believe:

1 – Stinging Bugs Need To Be Provoked Before They’ll Attack

A common myth is that bees and wasps won’t bother you unless you disturb their hive or nest.  But if you think these stinging bugs need to be provoked to attack and sting and you have a hive or nest on your property that you’re hesitant to get help with, you should know that you can be putting yourself, your family and even your pets in grave danger.  The fact is, bees and wasps don’t need to be provoked to attack; just your proximity to a hive or nest can be seen as an aggression and can result in a sting or two or ten.  If you see a wasp’s nest or beehive on or near your home or other structures, call a pest control expert for professional handling of the nest or hive.

2 – Mosquitoes Are Only Active At Dawn And Dusk

It’s a commonly-held belief that mosquitoes are only active at dawn and dusk.  Though they are generally most active during those times, they aren’t limited to those times of day.  They feed on blood when they prepare for reproduction so they become active when necessary.  In addition to leaving red, itchy welts on the skin, they also transmit the West Nile and Zika viruses and a host of other diseases. This means if you plan outdoor activities at any time during the day, take precautions by wearing long sleeves and pants and use spray insect repellent.  If your mosquito problem is out of control, get the help of a pest control professional.

3 – One Ant In Your Home Is No Big Deal

If you think that seeing one ant in your home doesn’t mean you have a bigger problem, you may be right. Ants sometimes end up in your home alone, usually when they can’t find any food for the rest of the colony. Ants leave a chemical trail for other ants to follow if they locate a food source.  If the food source is in your home, other ants will follow the scouts and you will have an ant colony inside your home.  While some ants are relatively harmless, others like carpenter and fire ants are not.  Carpenter ants will eat the wood structure of your home and fire ants will build mounds in your yard or around the base of your home, where they will sting anything or anyone who comes into contact with them.  So if you see one or more ants, you might want to think about calling a pest control company to help eradicate the problem before it gets out of hand.
