As a homeowner, you probably understand the importance of pest control, but you may not know how to prevent termites. Considering termites cause billions of dollars in structural damage, proper understanding of these dangerous pests is imperative. If you are a homeowner, consider using this guide to stop termite damage in and around your home.

Roof and Attic

Most people believe termites and other pests infest homes through the ground around the structure. Unfortunately, these dangerous pests can enter through your roof and attic, so you should complete periodic inspections on these areas.

To get started, check your roof for loose or broken shingles. If your roof is not properly protected with quality shingles and tiles, moisture will penetrate the roof. This moisture increases your risk of termites and other pests. Repair your shingles to prevent termites.

You should also inspect your attic for signs of moisture or condensation. Since this is not a well-used space of the home, termite damage may go unnoticed. Inspect all of the wood surfaces in the attic for moisture or actual damage from a termite infestation. If you notice that any of the wood is soft, hallow, or cracking, contact a pest control professional immediately.

Windows and Doors

Termites may also infest the frames of your windows and doors. These annoying pests can tunnel their way through the frames, eating and chewing as they go. In a very short period, windows and doors will become difficult to open. The frames may also show visible signs of damage.

Every few weeks, move around your home to open and close the windows and doors. If you notice moisture, air, or condensation around the windows or doors, apply a small amount of silicone around the frames. This will reduce moisture and prevent the appeal and entry of the termites.

Landscaping

The landscaping around your home will also be appealing to termites since overgrown plants and grass have a high buildup of dew. This moisture will attract termites and other pests, so make sure to trim overgrowth away from your home.

While outdoors, check spigots, garden hoses, and irrigation systems for leaks. If necessary, repair the leaks.  Also, remove empty containers, toys, buckets, and planters from around your home. These containers may appear empty, but they will most likely contain rain and dew, which will increase your risk of termites.
