If you own a home in North Texas, termite pest control in Frisco, TX should be at the top of your list of things to take care of this year.  Why is this so important?  Because termites are inevitable and the damage they do can go largely unnoticed until parts of your home collapse around you.  According to a study by Texas A&M University, 50% of all homes will have some type of termite-related problem within 10 years of construction and the National Pest Management Association says that termites cause more than $5 billion in damages to U.S. homes and other structures and are considered a bigger threat to wooden structures than fire, wind or floods.

But just because termites do their damage behind the walls and under the floors of your home, that doesn’t mean they don’t leave some evidence of their existence and of their handiwork.  If you’ve never had a termite inspection, it’s probably time to call a company you trust that specializes in termite pest control in Frisco, TX to have a look in and around your property for signs of a termite infestation.  In the meantime, here are some things you can look for that could be signs of a termite problem:

➛ Mud tubes on exterior walls are a pretty clear sign of the presence of termites.  Subterranean termites build pencil-thin tubes made of mud on the outside of buildings – normally near the foundation – which they use to provide cover and moisture as they move from the ground into your home.

➛ Swarms of winged insects or ‘swarmers’ are reproductive termites that fly from their colony to create new colonies.  Subterranean termites build their colonies in the soil and swarm in the spring.  Drywood termites build colonies in wooden framing, furniture, and hardwood flooring and have a less-predictable swarming schedule.  Even if you don’t see the swarmers, you may see small piles of wings on visible areas like window sills.

➛ Wood that sounds hollow when tapped could be evidence of termite galleries.  Galleries are long, hollow spaces in the wood left by termites as they eat through it.  Because termites don’t normally feed on the surface of the wood because air exposure dries them out, they burrow through the center of wood members.  Check window and door framing and other structural wood for a hollow sound.

➛ Frass is termite excrement that looks like small, wood-colored pellets.  If you find piles of these, usually around other types of visible damage like holes in sheetrock, you could have a problem with drywood termites.

➛ Holes or hollows in sheetrock, especially new depressions or holes that you’ve never seen before can be an indication that termites have eaten the cellulose part of the sheetrock.  Visible holes are likely going to be very small, about the size of pinpoints, and may even have frass falling from them.
